International Volunteer Day: A Day to Celebrate Helping Others

International Volunteer Day is celebrated each year on December 5th. Established by the United Nations in 1985, this special day honors the millions of volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to helping others. Whether they are cleaning up their local parks, helping during natural disasters, or supporting global causes, volunteers make the world a better place. IVD recognizes their contributions and inspires more people to join the movement to give back to their communities.

Volunteering is essential for solving many of the world’s challenges. Volunteers work in many areas often far away from home, including education, health, environmental protection, and disaster relief. They also play a key role in fighting poverty, promoting equality, and addressing climate change. For example, volunteers might provide food to needy families, teach children how to read, or plant trees in areas affected by deforestation. Their work often forms the foundation of many successful projects and programs.

We at Amazonas for example provide language courses, spread knowledge about youth mobility and many other things helping to develop a more inclusive society. Our motto ‘’Play. Learn. Evolve.’’ is what we try to implement in the Croatian society. We have local and international volunteers, and we offer different opportunities for volunteering, more info: https://amazonas.hr/volunteer-in-amazonas/?lang=en

Volunteering is not just about helping others; it is also a rewarding experience for us, the volunteers. It allows people to learn new skills, make meaningful connections, and gain a sense of purpose. Many young people use volunteering as an opportunity to grow as leaders and global citizens. Whether they are mentoring children, organizing events, or supporting international aid efforts, volunteering helps them develop confidence and empathy. It also shows them the value of teamwork and collective action.

International Volunteer Day is not just about recognizing those who already volunteer; it is also about encouraging more people to take part. Volunteering can be as simple as donating a few hours to a local charity, organizing a neighbourhood cleanup, or helping a friend in need. Every small act of kindness contributes to a larger movement of positive change.
