Hello everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve been here to let you know about a new opportunity that the EU offers you, just by being a young person with the desire to eat the world and get to know other countries, cultures and live other experiences… I always write my point of view about each new opportunity and of course, today won’t be different !
Let me introduce you today to the beloved “Youth exchanges”, and you might be wondering: What is a youth exchange? How does this work? and most importantly How can I benefit from it? Well, I got all the answers you are looking for 🙂
A youth exchange is an educational and cultural program that allows young people from different countries to meet, live together and work on common projects for a short period of time, usually from one to three weeks. These programs are designed to promote intercultural understanding, non-formal learning and the development of personal and social skills. The main characteristics of a youth exchange are the following :
Active participation: Youth are actively involved in the planning and implementation of activities, responsibility and leadership.
Cultural exchange: Participants have the opportunity to learn about different cultures, traditions and lifestyles, which promotes tolerance and mutual respect.
Non-formal learning: Through workshops, fun activities and collaborative projects, young people develop soft skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving and creativity.
Specific topics: Youth exchanges often focus on topics of common interest, such as social inclusion, environmental sustainability, active citizenship, health and wellness, among others.
Diversity of participants: Programs often include youth from different backgrounds and socioeconomic contexts, which enriches the experience and understanding of the world.
Support and facilitation: Youth exchanges are facilitated by experienced leaders or mentors who guide participants, provide support, and ensure a safe and constructive environment.
On the other hand, the part of the application for a youth exchange involves several steps, from finding the right program to completing the application and preparing for the experience, and here are the general steps:
1º Search for Youth Exchange:
You can go for European Programs such as Erasmus+ : Visit the Youth Portal for information on available projects and opportunities. (https://youth.europa.eu/home_en)
You can also look for Local youth organizations: Contact youth organizations or youth centers in your area that are involved in Erasmus+ programs.
2º Choosing the Right Program:
Evaluate the different programs based on your interests, skills, availability and the specific requirements of each program. Consider aspects such as the duration of the exchange, the country of destination, the topic of the project and the cost.
3º Gather the Necessary Documentation:
Documentation requirements may vary, but generally it includes: One application form provided by the program or organization, a letter of motivation in which you can explain why you wish to participate in the exchange and how you will contribute to the project and finally a CV where you must include your educational experience, work experience, and any previous participation in volunteer activities or exchanges.
In addition, it could be interesting to include letters of recommendation from teachers, employers or others who can increase your skills and character.
4º Submit Application:
Submit the completed application specified by the program. Be sure to meet all deadlines.
5º Prepare for the Interview:
Some programs may require an interview as part of the selection process. Be prepared to discuss your motivations, your expectations, and how you plan to contribute to the exchange.
6º Confirmation and Preparations:
If you are selected you will receive an acceptance letter or email confirming this, usually including information about transport, accommodation (if not included) and travel insurance.
Participate in orientation sessions: Some programs offer pre-exchange orientation sessions to prepare participants.
7º Participating in the Exchange:
Once at your destination, actively participate in all activities, workshops, and projects. Take the opportunity to learn, share, and build cross-cultural connections.
8º Reflection and Follow-up: At the end of your exchange, reflect on your experience, complete any required reports, and keep in touch with the new friends and contacts you made during the exchange!
By following these steps, you can increase your chances of participating in an enriching and transformative youth exchange. And with this I´ll say goodbye! Have a happy summer and of course, don’t hesitate to apply for these opportunities!!!
See you soon!
