The innovative approaches (capoeira, sports and sports activities) we use in working with children and young people result in an increase in the number of collaborators on our projects, an increase in the interest of schools and individuals to implement our activities, and thus the development of new Amazonas programs. In the field of work on the development of children’s socio-emotional skills through sports activities, we have conducted and are implementing several thematic programs.

Cycle of workshops Sport for a happier "self" – you can sign up right away

Sport for a happier “self” program was created based on many years of experience working with children to develop self-esteem, self-efficacy, social skills and emotional self-regulation through various forms of sports games and activities. Group sports are associated with a number of positive psychosocial outcomes in children such as: expanding peer relationships, better conflict resolution skills, limited presence of psychological difficulties such as anxiety and depression, higher self-esteem and generally greater life satisfaction. In this program, it is precisely these positive elements of sports activities that are adapted and created in a way that specifically promotes social learning.

The program consists of 10 workshops organized in different thematic units during which, going through numerous sports games, we put children in situations that give us the opportunity to learn social skills, as well as emotional self-regulation skills with them. It also helps us to raise their self-esteem and self-efficacy in order to reduce their social anxiety.

In order to be able to comprehensively influence the development of a happier “self” in children, the cycle includes up to 4 hours of counseling for parents with a psychologist or social pedagogue, which allows parents to improve parenting skills with professional support and learn about child access in specific situations and building a quality relationship with him.

It is possible to join the workshop cycle several times during the year, depending on the initial start of the said workshop. The cycle is always intended for children within the same age group. The work is performed in small groups, up to a maximum of 8 participants.

Classroom workshops for elementary school students

We also implemented a sports approach through several prevention programs with school classes in elementary schools. A cycle of five workshops More than sport – a tool for change is intended for students from 4th to 6th grade and is conducted in school classes. It is aimed at raising awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of the class as a team and the development of a positive atmosphere and teamwork through sports games with the ball (basketball, dodgeball).

The Rhythm of the Classroom program consists of 10 workshops for lower grade elementary school students and is aimed at developing classroom relationships, embracing diversity, and developing solidarity in the classroom. It develops the skill of group problem solving, and consists of team games and activities that include running and simple sports tasks. The program was conducted in the 2019/20 school year at the elementary school M.J. Zagorka in Zagreb in cooperation with the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation and was the topic of the master’s thesis of our associate, soon social pedagogue graduate Katarina. We expect research results.

Amazonas’ team consists of experts in the field of psychosocial work, and in addition to our tight circle, a larger team of psychotherapists also works with us. As part of our prevention programs Tribo Moderna and Sport for a happier “self”, counseling work with parents is an integral part of the program, with the possibility of involvement in psychotherapy.

We also offer the service of consulting with the parents of our younger and older members and users of other activities, and we will also be happy to recommend additional support from our therapist associates. And if in some situations we do not know how to help, we can certainly inform you about existing services in the community and recommend organizations and / or institutions that provide support to children and families.

Advisory work in Amazonas is carried out by Tena, a social pedagogue with over 15 years of experience working directly with children and families, manager of all social support programs and Vjeko, Master of Psychology, head of the Sport for a happier „self“ program and leader of the Tribo Moderna program.
